Palheiro Golf Clubhouse has a unique open plan design, which is both spacious and welcoming and has one of the best views on the island. It sits high above the bay of Funchal and has panoramic views over the mountains and Atlantic Ocean; views which can be enjoyed from the veranda whilst sipping a post round drink. The clubhouse environment is one of relaxation and calm. During the winter months, sitting around the open fireplace gives a cosy feel, while during the summer many a suntan is developed on the veranda. Our fully equipped Pro-Shop, with its welcoming staff and friendly service is the main point of check-in and information and specifically designed to optimise any golfers' shopping experience. Clothing labels range from Polo Ralph Lauren and Ashworth, Golfino and LPGA for Ladies, Footjoy shoes, to Titleist and Wilson clubs.
Gardens :
The gardens at "Quinta do Palheiro", to which the hotel guests have privileged and private access, are famous not only for the variety of plants that grow there but for the beauty of their setting in the hills to the east of Funchal, the capital of Madeira.
Madeira has long been called the "Garden Isle" and it seems that almost anything will grow in its fertile soil. In Funchal many tropical plants have found a home and the visitor can see Hibiscus and Bougainvillaea in flower almost all the year round along with Jacaranda, Spathodeas, Erythrinas and Bauhinias in their seasons.
The Palheiro gardens are situated at about 500 metres above sea level. The original owner, the Conde de Carvalhal, planted many trees on the estate and laid the foundation to the Camellia collection; some of his early plantings can still be seen today. Since 1885 when the Quinta passed into the hands of the Blandy family, successive generations have given much work and devotion to the gardens.
'Balancal' Game Fishing :
"The Atlantic Blue Marlin season in Madeira runs from May to October with the average fish being estimated at around 700 lbs. Past fish records show that approximately one in every ten is the fish of a lifetime, the elusive 1000 llb 'grander'!"
It has been said on many occasions that Madeira offers some of the finest fishing grounds for Atlantic Blue Marlin. Fish close to and in excess of 1,000lbs are caught here more than anywhere else in the world. Although you may not see the same numbers of marlin compared to other locations, the fish of your dreams is waiting for you just for you between May and October each year. Big Eye and Bluefin Tuna are also regularly caught with the average weight for Big Eye being around 100lbs. Wahoo up to 90lbs are not uncommon and make excellent sport on light tackle.
